Writing a Memoir..?

I have to write a 6 page Memoir for my english cl...I know this might sound dumb, but i just read Angela's Ashes and my teacher couldnt help pointing out that because it was a memoir Frank Mccourt didnt have to put anything said in quotations, does this stay the same for my own personal memoir? I feel so awkward typing and not putting quotations, it looks weird and i dont know if i should capatilize things the way i would if i were to put it in quotations..
