What pets are easy to look after?

i have a dog, but it is more of a family dog than mine, i really want my own pet that i could have and look after in my room as i feel i am responsible enough, i nearly persuaded my mum into letting me get a budgie but they wont let me because apaarently theyll smell and poo all over my nice carpet, is there any pets i could get that would be quite easy and fun to look after and not smell ( i hate reptiles thoughh) Please help.
